Learn about our current legislation
We work tirelessly during each state legislature session to advocate for zero waste policy. We rely on all our partnerships as well as voices of the concerned public who contact their legislators. On our Legislative Work page, you will find the most up-to-date legislation activities during the current session.
Contact your legislators
We ask our supporters to reach out directly to their legislators on urgent legislative initiatives. We provide example messaging for specific bills we’re working on (or opposing) at key moments. On an ongoing basis, it is helpful if you let your legislators know that you are concerned about plastic pollution, recycling, composting, and waste reduction (for example, if you see them at an event or town hall).
To find your legislator, visit www.leg.wa.gov. Click on “Find Your District” (on the menu on the upper left side of your screen), type in your home address, click the “Find My District” button. These are your state and national legislators.
Once they are identified, the most effective action is to call the Legislative Hotline (open M-F 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) which will connect you directly to a live operator at 1-800-562-6000. They will type up your message and send it directly to your representatives.
What to expect when you call: They will ask your name and address and then will let you list several bill numbers and state your support or opposition and a brief comment: “I urge your support/opposition on this bill because…”
We have heard from legislative aides that this is one of the most effective ways to convey your opinions to your legislators.
Alternatively, you can comment on each bill directly (online)! Here’s what to do:
- Go to legislative website (leg.wa.gov)
- Click on “bill information” on the left
- Type in Bill number (you can find the bill number on our Legislative Work page here)
- On the right-hand side, click on “Comment here”
- Fill out the required comment boxes (it will automatically figure out your district after you type in your address). Be sure to click select all three of your legislators. Click that you support the bill and add your personal (short) comment: “I support/ I don’t support this bill because…”
